Day 1 − American Folk Music Instruments
Students become familiar with the harmonica,
guitar and accordion. Presentations cover the science behind these
instruments, the materials used to make them and how these instruments have
developed over time. Students are given an opportunity to practice with
harmonicas and to examine a guitar and button accordion up close. |
Day 2 − History, Geography and Diversity of
American Folk Music
Students learn how American folk music
evolves from many different communities and regions. Musical styles
explored in detail include American folk music, conjunto (Mexican-American)
and blues. Each style will be examined in terms of early pioneers, key
instruments, geographic influences, legendary songs and artists. Sing
alongs and hands–on learning are used to reinforce lessons.

Day 3 − Songwriting Basics
Students are introduced to the basic
concepts of songwriting and as a group compose a simple song. Elements of
songwriting that are taught include ideas/inspiration, self expression,
musical style and rhythm. The song is written as a collaborative effort to
foster an understanding of the value of teamwork and each individual’s
contribution to the effort.
